Ars has an article Previewing McCain and Obama on geek issues that is a thoroughly good read. I find myself agreeing with Obama on everything from net neutrality to privacy rights. I find it interesting that Republicans like to run as advocates of individual liberties but are the ones pushing laws that restrict them the most.
One gripe though: these are issues that are important to everyone. To call them “geek” issues implies that they are only of interest to some, and thus cheapens them. Ars ought to have a better title for their article.
“I find it interesting that Republicans like to run as advocates of individual liberties but are the ones pushing laws that restrict them the most.”
You paint with a very wide brush here and in doing so cheapen the real values of an entire group based on the mistakes of a few. Next you’ll be telling us that all black people like water mellon & hate Mayonnaise.
It is true that there are Republicans that don’t do that. None of them seem to have been nominated by their party to run for president in the last 12 years.
If only the GOP would nominate someone like Arlen Specter, they might look a bit more sane to my eyes.
More reasons to not like Obama are:
-He pledged to keep the embargo on cuba.
-He pledged to increase the size of the military
-He talked about it being ok to unilaterally conduct war if it is for the nations security or interests.
-He talked about going around the UN if there is a threat to the nations security or interests.
It is surprising how Obama’s rhetoric is very similar to McCain and Bush.
I suggest you read a book “It can’t happen here” by Sinclair Lewis and it will be striking how Obama sounds very much like Berzelius Windrip. Do not get me wrong, I like Obama’s domestic policy but his foreign policy is not radical or very different from any other top candidate.
Could you cite your sources please? This does not sound like the Obama I have heard, or the positions listed on his website.
