Heh. I suppose you could say it has a 55-bit parallel interface, including control bits, but the protocol specifies that only certain combinations of 1 bits are valid.
There exist typewriters from that era with five-bit serial digital interfaces. They're known as teleprinters.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASR33 was an extremely popular teleprinter, later used with computers.
I'm extremely disappointed that this was merely cleverly-worded, as opposed to being a ridiculously cool hack.
