These are really good radios. Thanks for the writeup. It also looks like some Chinese manufacturers are getting into the handheld radio business. TYT and Baofeng have some nice ones out not. They are not iCom quality, for sure, but the price is definitely right! 73s, KD8POH

The Yaesu rigs also have a bug in their APRS message entering code: they do not allow you to send messages to recipients having letters in the SSID part of the callsign (i.e. N0CALL-GW). Kenwoods work fine. The APRS message’s callsigns are not subject to the AX.25 callsign limits (only digits in SSID) and letters are often used by stations on the APRS-IS.

Nice write up!

The only disagreement I have with your review of the TH-D72A is about the size. Modern HT’s are getting too small IMHO. I would love a bigger version with a larger keypad and display. Which could also make for a larger battery and longer run times.
