As I mentioned in the article: 35 minutes of MPEG TS from NBC, and over 50 from PBS. I typically fit 35 minutes of AVCHD camcorder footage on a DVD.

The reason for not converting to AVCHD is that it would require re-encoding in MPEG-4 AVC, which is lossy -- and it was already encoded in lossy MPEG-2. The computation time required to do that at 1920x1080 for 7+ hours of video is non-trivial, too.

I do make AVCHD discs from footage shot with my AVCHD camcorder, but the source and magnitude were different here.

Should just convert to an AVCHD conform disc (practically a simplified form of the blueray format for consumer applications that also works on dvd), which uses h264 I believe. How much HD mpeg ts can you fit on a dvd? Can't be much more than 10 or 15 minutes.

For your information, UDF is also a common filesystem for DVDs (it's the official filesystem for DVD Video and DVD Audio): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Disk_Format
