Today

September 19th, 2009

I had a meeting in town today (yes, “in town” makes sense when you don’t live in one). Afterwards, I went shopping. And enjoyed it. Shocking, I know.

I had a gift certificate to Anderson’s Office Supply. I found a beautiful print of a painting of a 1940s scene at the Newton, KS train station there. I think it’ll be nice in my office.

Then on to the most dangerous store on Newton: Book ReViews. The local nonprofit used bookstore (they donate all their profits to local charities). Somehow it is the best bookstore ever. I’ve been to the giant warehouses of used books in big cities, the giant book chains, mall bookstores. And nothing spells such immediate peril for an empty spot on a bookshelf as Book ReViews. It is terribly difficult to walk out of that place with less than 6 books in tow.

So here are the highlights of what I found today:

  • Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy (paperback, $2.50)
  • Asimov’s Prelude to Foundation (hardcover, $5)
  • The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide by Douglas Adams (all 5 items, hardcover, $6)
  • A collection of centennial stories for the church conference where I grew up, $4
  • Goodnight Bush, the hilarious parody of Goodnight Moon, for Terah ($3, hardcover)

Haha, the same thing happened to me for Asimov’s ! I also found very old mathematical textbooks in the same place, but it was in Belgium.

Google’s case insensitivity makes “Book ReViews” a highly un-googlable name. ;)

    Hello Goerzen,
you are a friend of mine even you don’t know me, and i don’t know you personally – but – i read your blog, since you brought me to haskell, and then i saw a few family fotos, read about your love to your child and wife, and since in my life – i am enthousiastic programmer since my 13th year of life – born 1971 – i have a few years earlier started to grow than you, made some very simliar experiences with family and birth of two golden sons, am thinking a lot about sense spirit and religion. 1 year ago i started writing memos for myself – this is the thing which launches the turbo in one’s self-reflection. writing for oneself. texts which don’t match any category of manners nor sense of decency. free and honest to one’s self.
when i read your blog – like this from today – i read between your lines. between each of one of your lines there are two hidden ones – you know.
i wish to hear from you, please, give me some current thoughts, i would feel honored a lot.
    with best regards
